REN After Shave Balm

REN After Shave Balm

REN Multi-Tasking After Shave Balm

This is a Guest Post by Mr CC

(with a little help from CC)

REN Multi-Tasking After Shave Balm is essentially a moisturiser for men. It comforts the skin, alleviates tightness after cleansing and helps to prevent irritation from shaving and ingrown hairs. It has a non-shiny, essentially traceless finish.

Why do I need it?

CC: Ok, Mr CC, you’re back helping me review a product I’ve clearly never used as its men’s skincare. Why is REN’s After Shave Balm essential in your male grooming routine?

Mr CC: It rehydrates my skin amazingly well without making it oily. It soaks right in. Used in combination with REN’s Clarifying Clay Cleanser I no longer worry about getting razor bumps when I shave. The smell is subtle and natural – rather than over poweringly ‘MAN’ like something like Brut aftershave. And when I apply it, my face doesn’t look all buttered up and shiny like I slathered a bunch of moisturiser on.

CC: You’ve just gone and used it now and you look refreshed and healthy rather than dried out and haggard. Do you only use it where you have shaved?

Mr CC: No… quite often I’m rocking a beard. I still shave around my neck and cheeks to give it shape and this is where I find the After Shave Balm most helpful because I am most sensitive around the collar line of my neck. But I also apply it to the rest of my face to moisturise after cleansing. It stops my skin getting tight.

CC: So in the world of Men, ‘After-Shave Balm’ is code for ‘Moisturiser.’ Do you think guys are reluctant to use moisturiser because it seems feminine or does it just not occur to them that they need it (hence needing to specify its for ‘after shaving’)?

Mr CC: Its a little bit of both. I think no guys like to admit they moisturise – if they do. Having callouses on your hands is a sign of manliness. Most guys don’t think they need it unless they have an actual skin condition. Women Multi-Tasking After Shave Balmhave different priorities – they are trying to look soft and keep young, but men come at it from a different viewpoint where ruggedness is masculine. They think moisturiser will soften them.

CC: So rather than being a practical solution to irritated tight skin, they see it as something that will make them look like Shane Warne post plastic surgery?

Mr CC: Yes, this is the fear.

CC: And does it?

Mr CC: No, it gets rid of dehydration lines like the crinkly dry ones around your eyes. But its doesn’t get rid of any character lines that make your face unique.

CC: Character lines like ones that women go gooey over George Clooney for?

Mr CC: Yeah. Take Brad Pitt for example. I’m in my early thirties so have been watching his movies for probably 20 years. Obviously he’s spent a ton of money preventing the ageing process and taking care of his skin, being that his look is his trade mark. The guy has clearly aged but his face still contains a lot of character that is distinctly Brad Pitt without that soft face-lift look. He looks more masculine now than ever and the guy moisturises!

CC: So, to summarise, After-Shave Balm = Moisturiser, and Moisturising won’t make you look soft, but keep all the character in your face  – like Brad Pitt – but without the crepey dryness. Moral of the story: Guys, you should be moisturising. Do you have any tips for guys who want to use REN’s After-Shave Balm?

Mr CC:

  • If you’re going to shave, prep your face first by washing it (explained in cleanser post), then shave – I use REN’s   Tamanu High Glide Shaving Oil rather than shave cream.
  • Once you’ve shaved cool your face with a face washer soaked cold water and dry.
  • Then apply the After-shave balm to your entire face and neck.

Tip: If you’re not shaving, after you’ve washed your face its important to note you should still cool your skin down with a cold face washer before applying the After-Shave Balm. This way the heat from the shower isn’t trapped in your skin. You get a better result and it stops you getting the sweats.

REN is exclusively sold by Mecca Cosmetica in Australia. Don’t be put off by the banks of makeup – they sell men’s skincare and are super helpful! Walk in, find the nearest sales assistant and ask for REN’s Multi-Tasking After Shave Balm by name because sometimes the men’s stuff is in stock but not on display. Remember you’re not the first guy they’ve seen in their store, so don’t freak out. Alternatively, buy it from their online store, linked below.
